The rock salt deposits in Wieliczka and Bochnia have been mined since the 13th century. The mines had the royal status, and salt mining as a industrial undertaking in Poland is the oldest of its type in Europe. The site consists of Wieliczka and Bochnia salt mines and Wieliczka Saltworks Castle. Visiting both Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines guests may observe the historic stages of the development of mining techniques in Europe from the 13th to the 20th centuries. Both mines, though the one in Wieliczka mainly, have hundreds of kilometers of galleries with works of art, which provide the occasion of making pilgrimage into the past. Wieliczka Saltworks Castle dates back to the medieval times and have been rebuilt several times in the course of its history.

Visitors are guided in groups and the tour takes about two hours. You will walk about 2km through the mine, please wear comfortable shoes. The temperature in the mine is 14°C. Light jackets in the summer are recommended!
